Marin Alsop, the onetime associate conductor of the Richmond Symphony who became a trailblazer for female conductors, looks back on her 14-year tenure as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, which concludes this month.
“If I had it to do all over again, I would not have tried so hard to move the BSO out of the Ivory Tower” with initiatives to more fully engage the orchestra with the urban community it inhabits. “Sometimes you have to say, ‘OK, this is not where people want to go.
