In and around Richmond: The Richmond Symphony Summer Series, “Stories in Music: the World of Robert Schumann,” continues with one-hour concerts by orchestra members and musicians from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond, Aug. 2, 9 and 16 at Dominion Energy Center’s Gottwald Playhouse. (Seating is limited.) . . . Virginia Commonwealth University’s Global Summer Institute of Music presents free solo, chamber, vocal and orchestral concerts by its participants, from Aug. 4 to 9 at VCU venues and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (plus a runout with flutist Ransom Wilson on Aug. 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington). . . . The Richmond Chamber Players play works by Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Mozart, Debussy, Ethel Smyth, Germaine Tailleferre, George Crumb and others in “Interlude 2018” programs, Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26 at River Road Church, Baptist. . . . Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church’s “August Musicales” series presents organist Christopher Martin with an ensemble of brass and percussion on Aug. 8, the duo of violinist Christiana Liberis and organist Michael Hey on Aug. 15, and The Thirteen, a Washington-based choral ensemble, on Aug. 22.

Noteworthy elsewhere: Charlottesville Opera concludes its run of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” with complete performances on Aug. 2 and 4 and a one-hour family version on Aug. 5 at the Paramount Theater. . . . Wolf Trap Opera and the National Symphony Orchestra stage Verdi’s “Rigoletto,” Aug. 3 at Wolf Trap’s Filene Center amphitheater. . . . The Staunton Music Festival opens with a semi-staged version of Handel’s opera “Hercules,” continues with programs ranging from Gershwin and the Strauss family to Schoenberg and Kurt Weill, and closes with Mozart’s Requiem and “Jupiter” Symphony (No. 41), in free noontime and ticketed evening and after-hours concerts, Aug. 10-19 at various venues. . . . The Garth Newel Music Center in Hot Springs presents chamber concerts featuring the Parker Quartet, Handel and Haydn Society concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky, the resident Garth Newel Piano Quartet and others on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons throughout the month. . . . The Virginia Symphony Orchestra performs in a “Symphony by the Sea” concert, Aug. 16 at Neptune’s Park in Virginia Beach, and a “Symphony under the Stars” concert, Aug. 30 at Lake Matoaka Amphitheater in Williamsburg, both free.
