The Festival of the River, an event mixing music, contemporary art and environmental education activities, will be staged from June 8 to 10 on Brown’s Island in downtown Richmond.
The festival will feature performances each day by the Richmond Symphony, artists booked for the Friday Cheers summer concert series and others under the orchestra’s Big Tent portable concert stage; a special lighting installation by 1708 Gallery; appearances by artists participating in “Declaration,” the opening exhibition of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Institute for Contemporary Art; riverfront environmental cleanup activities; and the creation of a “Richmond Community Member Quilt.”
Additional performances and activities will be announced later.
The festival’s lead sponsors are the City of Richmond, Venture Richmond, the Richmond Symphony, VCU-ICA, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, 1708 Gallery, James River Association and Capital Region Collaborative, with more than two dozen other partners signed up to date.
