When acronyms collide

“Spyware-maker NSO ordered to pay $167 million for hacking WhatsApp,” reads a headline in this morning’s Washington Post.

This is awkward for The Post and other media in this region. NSO is not just the short form of NSO Group, an Israeli tech firm, but also the acronym for Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra.

For the record: Here at Letter V, NSO refers to the music-maker, not the spyware-maker. VSO refers to the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, not the Veterans Service Organization; and RSO refers to the Richmond Symphony, not Rick Simpson Oil (a cannabis product) or Los Angeles’ Rent Stabilization Ordinance.
